The Rescuers Board Game From My Childhood

I think most people have a first favorite Disney movie. It’s usually from the time when you were just a wee child. My first favorite is The Rescuers from 1977. I was a mere 5 years old at the time. This movie taught me how to spell “rescue” with “R-E-S-C-U-E rescue aid society.” Madam Medusa started my love of Disney villains. And it opened my young eyes to the fact that some kids don’t have any parents.

I may be mistaken, but I believe I got The Rescuers board game for Christmas. But it could also have been my birthday. I have played this game literally hundreds of times. When no one would play with me, I played as more than one player. I always played as green or blue.

As you can see, this game has had lots of love. We moved quite a lot when I was young, something I continued to do until I moved back to Florida almost eight years ago. My mother would tape the games shut so the pieces wouldn’t fall out in the boxes. Tape from that long ago tends to yellow and flake off, but even if it’s gone, you can still see where it was.

I don’t remember when the arrow end of the spinner fell off. I guess flicking it with my tiny fingers proved to be too much for it. I still played with just the other end. Check out the tiny print at the bottom. This is a Parker Brothers game, a division of General Mills Fun Group.

The Rescuers game is something very simple that parents could teach their children and then leave them to play. I’m sure a lot of my fellow Gen X folks will remember playing with little to no supervision!

I’m very happy that I’ve been able to hang on to this game for the last 43 years. I had the ET board game and that one didn’t make it. Super sad about that. I also had the ET video game, which my siblings and I won on multiple occasions and loved. In these days of getting rid of things, try to remember to hold on to things that bring you joy. Things you can share with your children and grandchildren. They like to hear our stories about what it was like when we were kids!

Now that I’ve shared one of my all-time most loved board games, do you have anything like this? Does anyone out there still have this game?
