The Star Wars Launch Bay in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is finally getting changed. It’s been out of place since Star Wars Weekends ended and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge came about. If you recall, you used to go to this area and learn to draw Disney characters.
Today Disney announced that the space in Animation Courtyard will become “The Magic of Disney Animation.” It promises to be a place where kids at heart can laugh, draw, dream, and explore animated new experiences. Mickey’s iconic Sorcerer Hat will top the building.

“Our story in this newly reimagined space begins as the animators have temporarily stepped away… but the building is still buzzing with activity as the characters have come to life and they’re ready to play!”
“Inside, you will interact with and explore silly takes on the iconic Disney Animation headquarters, including the many different studio departments. Only this time, some of our favorite pals have taken over to create the fun adventures.”
You’ll see portraits come to life before your eyes and you can learn to draw your own character sketch.
There will be a “Drawn to Wonderland” indoor playground filled with an oversized flower garden with musical instruments, a Mad Tea Party playlet, and a Tulgey Wood exploration area. It’s inspired by the original “Alice in Wonderland” concept art by Mary Blair.

The area promises lots of Disney character meet and greets. I can’t wait to see who they will have available!
The entire courtyard will be transforming as it’s reimagined into “The Walt Disney Studios.” “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” and the Disney Jr. Show will remain. The area will be fashioned after the buildings in the Burbank studio.

“While exploring the studio grounds and courtyard area, families can take a break to play, relax, or snack on tasty treats under lush trees. And make sure to look around, too. You never know who you might see playing in the branches, soaking up the sun, or digging in the grass.” Special surprises to be found!
I am very ready for this update. It’s been a long time coming. Disney said it will open in 2026, without a season being mentioned. In order to prepare for this change, Animation Courtyard and Disney Jr. Play and Dance! will close beginning September 25, 2025. You’ll still be able to visit “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” and enjoy the exhibits and film presentation at Walt Disney Presents.
